Departing from there , Dhian Grace Holy Purnama and colleagues from the Department of Biochemistry , Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences , Bogor Agricultural University ( IPB - MIPA ) tried to test the compound in red betel against cervical cancer cells ( HeLa ) .
" We tried to compare the flavonoid compounds ( compounds believed to inhibit the growth of cancer cells ) generated from the water extract and ethanol extract of red betel leaves 30 percent to inhibit the growth of cervical cancer cells , " said Lead researcher , Dhian , in a written statement to Okezone Wednesday ( 12/18/2013 ) .
The research included in the Program Student creativity ( PKM ) is 30 percent ethanol extracts of red with betel leaf yield and total flavonoid levels greater than the water extract of red betel leaf . This is because ethanol is able to attract more bioactivity of compounds contained in red betel leaf .
However, the number of predicted molecular weight as flavonoids in extracts more water than ethanol extract 30 percent . Anticancer activity has greatest inhibition found in 30 percent ethanol extract .
" We conclude that the best extracts that can inhibit cancer cell growth is 30 percent ethanol extract of red betel leaf . However still needs to be done in order to obtain further purification of pure compounds that function as anticancer red betel leaf , " he added
